Middle School: Grades 5-8

Welcome to the Middle School at Shorecrest!

The Middle School years are a remarkable growth opportunity for children. Only the first two years of life mirror the broad development a child experiences from Grades 5-8.

It is our intention in Middle School to support your children, to give them choices over the years (science fair, history fair, project work) and most importantly to create balance in all that we do including the arts, our academics and athletics. Our wheel classes offer the best in art, technology, music, drama and debate. Our PE program is vibrant, rich and builds on skills as your child matures through junior high school years. Our clubs range from Model UN to Jr. Thespians to Forensics. This year, even our eighth graders are creating lunchtime clubs for students to participate in.

Each morning, groups of students meet with advisors in the Circle of Power and Respect (CPR), part of our advisory program. These first twenty minutes include games, activities, conversations and parties. It is a time to allow your child to “settle in” with the company of friends before we start our day. Grades 7 and 8 model the Upper School as we gather at the pavilion for a community-sharing event every Friday.

In the Middle School, we focus on field experiences as ways to strengthen our CPR bonds and allow every student to feel trusted and respected. Our students in Grade 8 go to Washington DC for four amazing days to experience the monuments, the museums, the White House, the Capitol Building and Williamsburg - for a more hands-on experience reliving American History and our country’s role in the global world.

Throughout the year in Grade 5, there will be day trips around St. Petersburg that include mangrove planting and SPCA work. In Grade 6, our students do an overnight at Pathfinders in January to build on community, trust, utilizing high and low elements, tree climbing and kayaking. Grade 7 heads off to the Florida Keys in April to spend three warm and water-filled days at Seacamp. Students benefit from this wealth of experiences as they connect with nature in a personal and hands on way.

Our Middle School is a vibrant place with students learning and discovering daily. Come visit us!

Life in Eighth Grade

For her eighth grade personal project in 2013, Adrianna L. produced a video about the great times her class had at Shorecrest. "Since it was our last year of Middle School, I thought, what better way to end an amazing four years than to leave everyone with something they will never forget - a video of the best times we had throughout the year!"

This video has been edited for length. Enjoy!
