Upper School: Grades 9-12

Welcome from the Head of Upper School!
I have always believed that the best high schools not only prepare their students for success in college, but also leave their students with a lifelong love of learning and a commitment to living a life of integrity. We are proud when our prepared graduates return for a visit and tell us that “college is easy”, but we are just as impressed by the many alumni who are making a positive impact in their respective communities.
Our philosophy is quite simple: we believe that students learn best when they have some ownership over their learning. At Shorecrest, students can choose from 25 Advanced Placement offerings (more than any other school in the area), as well as electives like Sub-Saharan Africa, iOs App Development, Digital Film and many others. An Independent Study option allows students, with the help of a faculty mentor, to craft their own course of advanced study that will connect them with experts beyond our St. Petersburg, Florida, campus. Students may also choose our Global Scholars Initiative (GSI), where they take courses on global affairs, connect with visiting scholars, and attend a dinner series with the Tampa Bay Council of Foreign Relations. Each March, students and faculty use Service Week to help make a difference in other communities of need. There are over 20 programs where students can put empathy into action, from as far afield as Cusco, Peru, to the local Pinellas County chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
Our other core belief is that our students come first. Though the curriculum is challenging and filled with exciting opportunities, there is a commitment to supporting our high school students during their journeys. Our faculty are not just master teachers, but serve as mentors to them. If one of our students is struggling, we circle the wagons and create a support structure which will provide guidance through tough times. Our College Counseling Team are experts who have extensive experience in college admissions. They’re also committed to shepherding our students and parents through the difficult maze of standardized testing and college applications.
This is an exciting place to learn and I hope you will take the time to get to know us better. If you come, you will see students who work hard, but have fun. You may see the captain of the football team take the lead role in our award-winning musical. You will encounter students engaged in meaningful leadership opportunities through our Honor Council. The opportunities for growth and enrichment are plentiful, and we would love for you to join us!
All the best,
Tom Dillow
Head of Upper School
